Happy Easter guys, I'm assuming that you've consumed way too much chocolate and the thought of anything sweet or choclatey is just making you feel sick. Never fear, this is a good type of candy, one for the eyes. (Yes, eye candy). I had some spare downtime today and thought I'd knock something together.
It had been a while since I used Google Chat within Gmail or G+. I always thought it was a cool feature that was never really given a lot of attention. I was hoping to see a desktop version for Mac to appear at some point but I think this died out long ago. So I thought I'd mock up an example of what my vision of the Mac application would be like given the new direction Google products have taken.
Something that stuck in my mind when I was creating this was how much integration the Android (ICS) has when it comes to Google Plus, with that in mind to help improve Googles consistency and to keep things within the Google brand eco-system I thought it would be pretty smart to take advantage of the icons that they have used within their Android platform to help bring a little consistency to the overall product.
Looks really sweet, i'd certainly use it. But the problem is Google Chat is dead. I don't know anybody that uses it. Most people use Skype or Facebook Chat nowadays but linking it with Android would be sweet (and Google+), a bit like how Apple are making iMessage work.
I think Google are going to struggle with this sort of thing (and Google+) because it already exists and so much better, and more people access it.
@Jason Mayo One of the things Google force on Android is the intergration with their services, which is fair enough and pretty logical. The intergration also pushes a lot of content to google plus, I guess this will be a way that they get people using it. I think as the service gets popular it would be cool to see something like this mock up come in to play as I feel it could open up a whole new market for them to compete in.
Indeed it looks good but the conversation looks like a forum more than a... chat. People write a line and press enter in a chat so I think you should replace the content with one of your actual chats. You might want to make the avatar smaller or change the things a little bit.
@Sorel Mihai Arghire thanks for the feedback, I'd be inclined to disagree slightly with it looking too much like a forum. The idea was to mix in a little more swag from Google Plus and the way you would see conversations there. I may be part of the minority but my chats don't look to different to this.
I would use this in a heartbeat. I think Google chat might have a comeback... if things like Hangouts could be incorporated, I see it as a Skype replacement... plus, I have much more stable Hangouts than I've ever had with Skype calls... I think a little work by Google could make this service go a looooooong way.
@Devon Henderson Exactly the idea I'd had I think it'd be cool to see Google release something that basically works across all of their product and ties things in pretty well. If they did this I could see it being a lot better than the Skype + Facebook combo.
You know man, I don't normally say this about all the "redos" or the "I would do it like this" stuff on dribbble, but this is actually really well executed.
You do a nice job of keeping the brand of the product and making it intuitive and focused, while making it look great. I REALLY wish this was an actual app...and would download/pay for it instantly.
