Like the leather effect paired with the green banner. Possibly lessen the intensity of the scan-lines? It feels as though more could be done with the navbar to make it feel a tad less apple?
@Ted & @Kyle The Apple thing never really hit me until you said that. It really does look like that (certainly in this shot of the UI at least.) I'll have work with this some more to avoid that tie.
Slick concept. I kind of like the slight imperfection of the left and right edges of the ribbon (maybe an illusion?). Makes the ribbon look like someone actually glued it on there. On the nav, I think the default state of the items is much more readable in the top version, but I'm liking the slight inset happening on the bottom one (selected/hover state).
I love the leather texture on the top example. It's very lush. Which isn't something you normally equate with universities. And I agree that the scan lines are a little bright on the red example. Fabulous!

I think that would render itself to work pretty well...

Feels like a University website meets Apple.com.

Thanks for the suggestions Kyle.

Since the shadow of the letterpress effect on the menu is 90º the banner should be too. It's on 110 or 120º right? 90º should work fine

the red scanlines are a bit too bright.

I work with higher education apps everyday. For the most part they suck. This however is intriguing.
