Here's what I ended up with—killed the alternating shear angles, tightened the kerning, refined the flourishes (most of which are chopped up from Hoefler Text Ornaments), and added a subtle graphical drop shadow that you can't quite see at this scale.
Still not happy, but deadlines are deadlines. Live to fight another day.

I liked the effect of the last type, but it would have needed more polish to really work. This one looks nice too. Good job!

I dig it - could always use more tweaking but I think this is a nice improvement over the last one.
If you hadn't submitted asking for critiques, I wouldn't have any.
