I like both options, if I got cursor above window I can close window by 'x' faster :) I would keep that solution because it will be usable for each type of user.
Well, I wouldn't get rid of the X just because it does or doesn't balance the design. What's the purpose of it? Would the user be able to do everything they need without it there?
I think the X should stay for usability reasons. Although the Cancel button and close icon do the same thing behind the scenes, to a user they mean different things. Cancel is more of a "Eh, I'd rather not do this right now" where the X icon is "Get me out of here!!"
That being said, everything here looks awesome. Really digging it.
Also, I think if the user sees the popup in this state after they've selected a file, you should keep the cancel button. Cancel makes sense if the state has changed. Sure it does the same thing as the x, but it provides that extra "undo" feeling.

Working on a web app. What do you think? Personally I think the 'x' button has to go. Although it balances the modal window.

Chris,
Yes they would. It closes the window just as 'cancel' does. But without it the window looks unbalanced. So I think I'll just keep it.

Jonno, I strongly think that "cancel" buttons placed next to the main action button "send" is asking for trouble.
Users can easily click your cancel button by accident when trying to hit send, which will probably send them into a frenzy.
In my opinion it would be better to keep the "X" button and lose the "cancel" button.
That way accidents are avoided as well as redundancy.
P.S. Removing buttons is always good. Makes it very clear as to which button you're supposed to be clicking.

I like the x. I'd keep it and just pull it back a bit, maybe like this.

looks great!
But, I agree with Jake (keep the X, lose the circle around it)

Thanks guys. This looks indeed way better. Modified the buttons a bit to make it look more like a app than a web app.
