This (deceptively simple) animation took 3 hours to figure out. A practiced animator I am not.

It feels like the "drops" that fall upwards kinda go back and forth, maybe let them go straight up while the "drop base" rotates? Anyhow, very slick.
Flowing fields of energy are the WORST. But there are definitely books that can help you imagine the architecture of these things - perhaps the most obvious one is The Animator's Survival Kit. Anyway, that looks good!
