Lowered opacity as suggested, added the highlight to balance it out and keep contrast. I knocked together a quick icon for it too. The idea is the physical folder type of folio but would need tweaking to perhaps an open folder or something different like an easel etc.
How about loose papers and a folder. But maybe you shouldn't go with an icon at all? A Portfolio says Portfolio - doesn't really need an icon to describe it.
I may not use icons yet - It's either all with or all without. If they're used, it's purely decorative but as I mentioned in the first shot, it's just experimentation at this point.
I think we are guilty of using Icons for the sake of it. They are good however for interface work, but for navigation I don't think they are required, unless you want to slim down your navigation real estate by using a Home icon or a Mail icon.
They are definitely not required here and I won't be replacing the text with them. However, I think they add a touch extra on the aesthetic side and compliment the type.
Agreed, this isn't what icons are about but I'm okay with the occasional piece of "eye candy" just for the sake of it.
Well it's good that we can debate on Dribbble, instead of the usual back slapping that goes on.
It's healthy.
I don't claim to be the oracle on anything, but I see icons useful in certain situations, but not as navigation.
When you open say Apple Mail and you have your icons for Get Mail etc... well it works, mainly because they are buttons in essence.
In Things App they work because they illustrate what Next, Someday, Scheduled etc mean in the context of the application.
For navigating a site, I would say they are not needed, and are like you say extra and not essential to the overall translation of what your trying to convey.

Does that make sense?

Absolutely, I agree. Icons are supposed to represent what they link to without any text and it should be clear what they represent.
They definitely aren't doing that here and aren't needed as such, but I still think they add to the aesthetic though and add to the overall design.

Folio Icons

I needed a break from some other work so got the pen tool out and threw these together quickly to find a portfolio icon replacement.
