This is not something what i'm working at, just a small topic and curiosity. To me Dribbble has helped a lot to improve my skills and creativity during this year that i have been part of it. I think a selected community like Dribbble gives the possibility to different levels of designers to get inspired, improve their skills, follow a certain fashionable style. Talking for my self, Dribbble has made me a better designer and i think is the best community ever made. Let's hear your opinion just to see how it has helped other to improve or anything else great to hear.
I totally agree with you Vasjen, good topic! it made me a better designer, better than I could imagine.. when I first started I had like 4 or 5 logos, I had luck to be invited by someone from indonesia... I grew up from that since day 1, I gathered inspiration from others, I was motivated more than ever and gave myself goals (I still do) like 1 shot per week, now it's like I nearly break the shot limit per month...
I gave myself goals for improving skills and learning new things like now I gonna focus on icon design, now on UI / App design, or typography, and branding in between!
you might remember like I told you I prefer Forrst, and I thought "oh what's so special about dribbble anyway", and that's simply because I wasn't in this club, and didn't came in. now that I'm on dribbble, I rarely visit Forrst and don't know what was great about it even tho it's a great place and different concept. they have now so much annoying Rules. where as dribbble is taking it much easier and better functionality/usability!
now I'm supporting those that have potential but didn't get in, mainly swiss people because I'm from here. the least I can do to support them.
additionally, I got better skills and learned a lot of new things and got great feedback which made me so much better, made my own personal logo (which I couldn't imagine 1 year ago), thanks to @dribbble, the best community I can think of!
Whilst it certainly makes you a better designer, it can be easy to fall into the trap of designing for Dribbble - If you're making something, you make it so it will get you hundreds of likes on Dribbble, rather than perform the function it needs to for the client. That can be a really dangerous thing.
It's also way too easy to fall into trends. If you want something to be liked on Dribbble, you'd be best off doing a retro design or a shiny icon. If everyone did retro design or shiny icons, the world would become a very boring place. Variety is essential, and I'm not sure that Dribbble nurtures that. Look at the Popular page now. Is it all that different from the Popular page last week? Or last month? Even last year? Probably not.
@Conor O'Driscoll as google has said in one of their ads " internet is what you make of it " i would say is the same here, Dribbble is what you make of it, knowing the fondamentals and being a designer is not following trends i agree, but there are so many ways to use Dribbble for good and thats what i was refering to.
@Vasjen Katro Oh, I totally agree with you, and I, for one, have learned loads from Dribbble. But it's just worth pointing out that as great as Dribbble is for learning, it's not without its flaws.
@for me main thing dribbble gave me is motivation and inspiration when i see some amazing works here!!
only thing that could be chnaged alittle is this retro trend lol,its good thing but not cool when suddenly everyone is in that retro feel lol
Constructive feedback, self determination, the correct tools and regular exposure to inspiration makes you a better designer ... dribbble merely allows access to 2 of them.
Dribbble works for me as a big window exposing some of the best design work happening in our industry worldwide, pushing the quality bar higher and make you push yourself more and more.
The positive affects here are much more than the negative ones. Inspiration, very good quality in different styles and over all, here are just designers, no account, no clients or other people who could influence design in a way it doesn't need. Just the pure opinion about our work gives us a honest feedback which we need sometimes to improve or change something. I just like it :)
It's definitely helped me to improve too! But like @Conor O'Driscoll said, make sure you're not designing for dribbble. Remember you're audience when designing. Most of the time we're not designing for other designers, and the things that designers like might not be the same things that the general public like.

Dribbble is nice for showing your work and getting some inspiration. But for me, it has been close to useless for serious constructive feedback.
