I've been working with a mexican restaurant in San Fran called, The Little Chihuahua. They have been in need of new branding. These are the concepts we didn't end up going with! Check out the screen shots to see some of the different styles I tried.
I prefer #1. It's the most playful one, the most fun one. The ONLY reason why would stay away from it is the use of the Chihuahua in that other restaurant chain a while back. The reason to go with it is it's playful & fun, and doesn't use the stereotypical pepper, mexican design motifs, etc.
I wouldn't let Taco Bell's dog keep you from employing the dog. It's the very name of the restaurant and your icon doesn't conjure up the other. Great work. By hand, no less!
These are all wonderful. Would have been interesting to see sketches 3 & 4 with the little dog...I'm sure you tried that, too. I like how you explore - thanks for sharing your sketches!
I like #5 the most. #3 is a font style I've seen on Mexican brands. It's a heavy font and it makes me think of a heavy meal. The ascenders in the H's of #4 allow for too much empty space between the type at the top and having two lines of type on an arch may bee too much. IMHO. #5 feels classy. I like the cuteness of the dog, but I'm not sure if you need it the final design, though it may be memorable with people. Taco Bell did a chihuahua — I'm sure your client's food is better than TB's. ;-)

They're all gorgeous, can't even decide which one I like best. Your lettering is just outstanding - but you already know that.

Go with #1, the icon and typography work well together. It's fun and unique, and will make a great mark. Killer!
