So this is why I was up until 2am last night.. Had an idea for a new personal project involving planets, and got a bit carried away on this tangent..
It's all done with Photoshop - the only external file I used was the texture for the planet surface, which you can see here: http://www.unsigneddesign.com/Rock%20and%20Concrete%20Textures/6.jpg
The background stars and the ring around the planet were created using noise, glows and gradient contours (heavily layered)
Full resolution is attached - 4192 x 2706 pixels (random I know - but I can make desktop friendly resolutions if people would like that, just let me know your screen size!)
Expect many more of these to come...
