If you haven't seen Astute Graphics' newest plugin, Drawscribe, you should check it out. I made these hombres when I first started testing it and it rocked my world.
This plugin replaces the pen tool completely. After a few days, you don't want to go back. You can place points and edit paths simultaneously with this tool. It's intuitive to learn and pretty easy to use. I think designers are going to love having this in their arsenal.

I actually looked at VectorScribe in the past but didn't pull the trigger. DrawScribe looks very tempting though...
