Great write up on your design process, Mike. And thanks for mentioning VectorMagic; I plan to check it out when I get a chance. How does it compare to Illustrator's LiveTrace/LivePaint?
No comparison Kurt. VectorMagic is completely clunky from a UI perspective, but the kind of vectorization it can do is amazing. I decided to buy the Mac app for $300 - great investment. However, you can also do a monthly subscription and I think they offer a free trial of some kind. Go check out the site to see a demo.
I'm considering it. I just stumbled upon Potrace (via Krishna Sadasivam's VectorTut QuickTip this morning). So, until I can scrape together a trio of benjamins, I'm gong to see how that'll treat me.
