I've been working on a redesign for my (temporarily shutdown) blog and have been stuck in a rut for a while. Just recently have I been able to sit down and really focus on the design and the direction I want to take my blog.
This is a little navigation I created for the blog. In writing this little comment I realize the balance of it is bothering me. The shorter length word on the left to a longer length word on the right. I'm thinking I should change the last two. Maybe "Posts" instead of "Archive" and "Feed" instead of "Subscribe"?
What say you?
Side Note: Logo was designed by a good friend of mine Kevin Richardson. Check out his stuff:
Having seen some of what you were working on before, I think this is a nice evolution. I'm always a fan of subtleties, but I think the one suggestion that I have is that the contrast between active and inactive is too stark. Not sure if it's just because "archive" is jet black, and "Home, About, Subscribe" is spank white, but the piece in it's entirety makes me squint a bit. haha Structure and arrangement is nice though. I'd just work on the tones.
oh yeah, thanks for the props. The logo looks sweet in there!
Thanks for the feedback guys! Here's the updated shot.
I updated the last two links and it definitely feels better and balanced. Thanks for the advice Kevin! I darkened the lighter shade and lightened the darker shade. Makes it softer and not so dramatic of a change from inactive to active.
I would say instead of creating a rounded box, I would just change the type style (or color). I think by wrapping a box around the text, it tries to stick something in there that doesn't belong. Just a thought. Still pumped to see the interaction methods you've been planning in your redesign too.
Thanks Jake! I think it will make more sense when seen in its entirety.
Anyway, I think I'll be holding off on anything crazy with the navigation interaction. I don't have too many posts for it to be a benefit (lol). There will be something pretty basic but neat (to me anyway). I'll likely be modifying it as I write more to allow for more interaction. We'll see! What I got going, might just be enough...

Looking good JR! I'd agree with your comments regarding the balance of the links. Posts and Feed would probably fit better.

I really enjoy two things: 1. subtleties and 2. black and white. This happens to include both ;)
