@Christopher Lee ... Well there are several connections. Color is the most basic. Since the illustration has a black outline, black made sense for the logotype. The type is very bold / heavy similar to the proportions of the pencil. The sharp angles on 'a' & 'g' help reinforce the point of the pencil. The circle in the key hole is repeated on every letter... etc.
