Book Cover "The Bible in Polish Painting

The album "The Bible in Polish Painting" presents a part of the collection of works of art painted on the lands in contemporary Polish borders: paintings, book painting and stained glass available in museums, galleries and temples. 150 works illustrating the Old and New Testament scenes, created from the Middle Ages to modern times, were selected from the rich material. Each painting is presented along with a discussion of the biblical context of the event, with a reference to a specific passage from the Bible. Often, these inspirations also refer to lesser-known texts - apocrypha, descriptions of saints' visions, selected works of Christian writers. Some scenes are depicted in the perspective of several artists, among which each brings out new meanings and meanings of the presented motif. The author's desire was to bring not only outstanding works, but also lesser-known, local productions, equally interesting iconographically examples of the artist's struggle with the matter of the biblical message.
