Today I read this article http://bit.ly/xrHpTB about the windows logo redesign for your 8 version and I thought I could 'rebound' him if he was in dribbble. Well, it is not in dribbble, but I got the rebound anyway.
More windows, less flag I said. (and a bit o speech baloonish) :)
I think we have a broad view of what could be done or undone in the redesign of the windows, then. Tell me what you think of my idea, and all are invited to show me your version too! (yes, this is a call to a Play-off: D).
I like the direction on the new Win logo, but i feel it's missing something. Breno's idea is quite good, but maybe too social? Or it's prolly' just me, I think had enough of the speech bubble.
Yes @Daniel, I liked the new logo as weel, but to me seems like a flag yet. This is just a quick rebound, please don't take it too serious, guys! :D
Yes, @Stelian, I agree, these bubbles seems VERY social. Besides this is a great 'trend' on internet stuff, maybe just the right top could show the same depth and less bubbling. :)
Really good idea and execution with negative space. However in my opinion the new Windows 8 logo is very good because it's all about their OS with square tiles, flat colors and movement. It was also designed by Pentagram. Those guys know a lot about branding ;)
To be honest, not that excited about the new look. Who else has taken Windows (creatively speaking) for granted? I know I have. Whereas if they updated their Microsoft logo...
(the basic logo would just be blue squares without the little icons inside)
By all means this is far from perfection, but I wanted to illustrate how certain ideas could be implemented if the window stayed on a straight perspective.
I don't want them to remove that idea of windows being a flag. It can be fluidly animated just like http://bit.ly/m8Gufc and be the symbolic icon of dynamic interfaces. Apple's design is the very uniform and controlled software, Windows can be the software that is more representative of freedom and fluidity in design.
Pentagram, hmmm... this don't says much to me. There are many bad work done by renowned agencies, and many excellent work being done all the time by the staff here at dribbble.
However, I think this worth to be discussed and my first intention was not attack Pentagram creation, but explore alternative solutions with everyone here on dribbble. :)
I really don't like Windows new logo (I might be the only one).. It's over, over-corporated.. This one is nice by the way.. The window look takes the "over, over"- part away :). Like the speach bubbles too!
I have to say, I have been lusting after Pentagram's work since my college days in the late '90s, but, to be quite honest, I am not feeling their logo redo AT ALL.
However, yours I like, Breno. It's the very slight addition of 3D to the panes that really brings life to an otherwise dull approach.
If you go back to the previous logos, you'll see that all are quite ugly, I'm a windows xp user, the only thing I hate about are the gradients on the logo and the ugly UI... They went with this because its like their new UI minimalistic... And I bet you all get used to, like all new things, first you hate it and think why change it... And later you think about why did I hated it again?
If you love XP and vibrant gradients, then no offense! ;)
I actually think that, all of these world renown agencies (which I also respect a lot) do a hell of a job in terms of branding, packaging, web design and so on, but never really impressed me with their logo works exclusively. As Breno mentioned, I've seen far better logos around these parts.
I'll be willing to bet 16eleventy-bajillion dollars (which I DO have, but it's hard to access because it's in a vault buried 12,000 meters below the surface of Mars) that this new Pentagram WinBlows logo was designed on a Mac.
Hello, Irony. Won't you stay for tea and crumpets? Perhaps some spicy Buffalo Wings?

I didn't think of these panes as speech bubbles, but more of a 3Dish version of a window. I like it a lot.

I see the chat bubbles, but I also see a 3Dish window. Was it intentional?

I'm glad you like it, @Sergio. Mainly idea is give it more 'window' feel, thats right!
Yes @Paul, both are intentional. Did you like it? :)

So and so, it's a bit too 'angular' for my taste :)

Ha, I can't believe I've missed the 3Dish window. WTF, brain? This is actually really great, man.

Wow, this looks nice. I prefer this over their execution.
Although, you could have fixed their mistake in the middle bar's perspective... it should get larger to the right.

I think real and consistent perspective, paired with a bit more spacing and actual Windows colors make it better.

I really don't think that the new redesign solves their flag/window problem.
