i'm digging the subtleties of the orange on the actual map.. what if the background were a different color? that would allow the map's orange to stand on it's own esp. by keeping the hint of orange in the letters.
Lookin good! Kinda weird that the highlights (orange) is in the cast shadow no? Maybe swap the black and orange on the dimensional part of the lettering.
here i am just posting Yet Another Opinion On The Internet, but i agree with alex, there's something weird going on with the shadows. I think what strikes me is the overkill, there's this fabric/collage/rendering/blockstyle mashup going on and i'm not sure it all works together, especially the heavy inset on the letters.
@Alex Rinker and @Justin Maxwell you guys are spot on. I wanted to use the background color within the 3d somehow. I like the way it bleeds into the background. But the lighter color inside the shadow is all wrong. I'm working on trying to fins a better color way to fix that
First. Yes. This is awesome. Second you have done it again. I know this isn't helpful but it looks like you've got some good input from smart people concerning the orange. I'm just gonna sit back and wait to see the final awesomeness.
If the shadows are dropping left and down, then the right sides of the letters shouldn't be dark... unless I'm missing something. It wouldn't be the first time. Lovely textures though, and the map details looks amazing.

Looking good to me. You could try a tiny bit of blue in your gray hues.

I agree. I think if we stick with the yellow/orange color that the greys need to be a cool blue tint. Im just not 100% in love with the orange.

although personal experience with the Gowanus Canal leaves me somewhat conflicted, maybe the water should be a nice pop-tone blue?
