Add anchor points with handles parallel to the grid to keep Illustrator from making nasty pixel artifacts.

Totally agree with you, but only for Illustrator.

Can we start a playoff with pro tips? This would be great, especially with such a deep bench of talent in this place.

Why didn't all the other 'Pro Tips" rebound the original? Bummer. Love this idea.

In Fireworks, set your grid to 1px and 'Snap to grid' to keep all your little bits clean and sharp. This will keep the app from trying to 1/2 pixel anything. Trust me, this works!

When you make a new document in Illustrator CS5, you can choose "Align New Objects to Pixel Grid". You can also do this from the Transform panel. But be careful, because it can be messy sometimes.

@ Hans Jørgen Wærner Good point, but Illustrator's "messy" implementation drives me nuts.

Group a symbol before breaking the link to it to prevent Illustrator from making a slew of sub-layers.
