Needs color. :P I like it, but something about drawing Cloud and not having an anime-style feels weird to me. Definitely different though (and not in a bad way). If I had to pinpoint what bugs me the most it would be the very american-style nose for this character.
Takes guts to try something different and then toss it to the sharks. I'm no illustrator, so I don't have much for a critique, other than I really like that eye.
@Mark I can totally understand, but your critiques actually validate exactly what I am going for. I'm not an anime style fan in the least. I like americanizing things.
Mark is on the right track there, try him with a bit more asian face (not anime style, but actual asian shaped features). The neck jumps out as too long and thin and his ears may be a bit oversized for the character, but they're fun though.
I dig it, Rogie! FF7 is one of my all-time favorites. Needs a bit more angst though, methinks. Cloud always seemed so moody. :) Easily done with adding some eyebrows.
Really dig the direction and style. He has your signature recessed feeling eyeballs which I dig. No real critiques yet since it's an early stage and seems to be cropped. Keep going brutha!
nice one Rogie, what Id suggest is that you focus on silhouette itself more than inner details for now. That way you will better imporve uppon your goal of making them more disproportionate, once silhouette is interesting and readable focus on inside and everything will follow up nicely, you will know what style for nose to have, than eyes all will be bettr flowing.
Just continue doing these more
I think the style works, it's adorable! His ears kill me, way too cute! And personally, I like taking well know characters and putting them into your own style (that's mostly what my portfolio is, to be honest.) I do agree with the statement about the neck being a little too long and thin though. It's looks as though it's kind of upside down proportion wise? What I mean is that typically the thinnest part of the neck is where it meets the head and then it gradually gets thicker as it meets the shoulders. Does that makes sense? Gah, I'm not so good at critiques. Really fun style though, overall I like it! :)
The hair needs to be bigger, much bigger and the face seems too long. If you change them aspects you might get a better outcome. Saying that, I still think this looks awesome :)
@Courtney totally makes sense. I have a long way to go to get anywhere near where I'm diggin it and I feel like the style is mine, but at least I'm on the journey, and I'm on the ride for fun. :) Thanks for your thoughts.
@Jake totally jiving with you there. I think @mediahack's comment of looking like Wart from Sword and the Stone really makes sense in context with what you are saying. He needs to be cute, but angry-cute :P

Trying something...please realize, I'm still very much growing as an artist, so every bit of critique is appreciated.
Things I like:
— Actually making noses
— The wee beady eyes
— Monkey ears
— Massive hair
Things I want more of
— Wonky facial expression
— More disproportionate-ness

Reminds me of a cross between Cloud and Wart from Sword in the Stone.

@mediahack haha, I can totally see that — he seems so innocent. Not a fearless bludgeoning soldier.

I really like the direction this is taking! Are you thinking of rendering it?

@David As I never intended him to have an asian influence, do you think Mark is still right on? I did want him to be american.

LOVE the "Americanization" of this. Great first pass! Love the collar and the nose.

I don't buy the comments about Anime. Make it your own. It's a piece of Rogie. There's no rules here.
