more notes after a good discussion with @marcedwards:
- using the layer mask palette to feather won't work, it rounds to nearest integer, and we need adjustment by tenths.
- using a blur is acceptable for a flat shape, but many times we'll be working with meaningful content (like a screenshot). that's why putting the antialiasing responsibility on the mask is beneficial: it leaves the display content unaltered
