Agreed Jason. Couch and I were discussing that issue earlier. The default setting is for it to be at the second option and it would be absolute jumps. Here is a revised version combining Sebastiaan and Andy's suggestions. I think Andy's suggestion to place the selected state above the verticals along with the fact that it defaults to the second setting should help to clarify functionality to the user.

The placement of the final vertical is still bugging me. Are there 5 levels or 6? The 5th iteration extends beyond the 5th bar, whereas logically it would stop there and THEN proceed beyond it to level 6.

Perhaps move the bars inward to account for that?

hmm- this isn't a slider is it? I have to press the letters at either end to adjust. I'm wondering whether the gauge looks too much like a slider.

I'm sure people would figure it out after a couple of taps, but that's never the point with iphones is it?

I'm wondering if you need to detach the gauge at either end and have it in in it's own box? that way the "buttons" would be more immediately recognizable as something you need to press. What do you think?

Ohhhhh, maybe not. If it's 2 buttons with a gauge in the middle, that changes things. Haha!

Right again Jason. I was basing my layout off of the iPhone slider because that is what we use in the Settings section of the application for this feature. Poor oversight on my part when I was working on this revision earlier today to not adjust for the lack of the slider button.

Since pinch to scale is somewhat hidden, this is actually a secondary approach to font adjustment in the USA TODAY update. The more straight forward approach for scaling that is being added to the application is through Settings. Couch posted a screen of that for context.

This new screen I'm uploading shows the five equal areas. I think that helps a lot as well.

ah ok i understand now! I'm not sure the pinching works in the context of a text reader- it only really makes sense to zoom on pages that are wider than the iphone screen; like web pages in safari, or maps in... umm...Maps. All of the text readers I have installed (Instapaper/Newsstand/tweetie) keep the text size on the settings page or use a popup slider.

Give it a try once it hits the store and let us know what you think Andy. It is really convenient and takes up no screen real estate, and we still get to cover our bases in Settings. I think it works well. To be clear, this is font scaling and not screen zoom functionality like you would see in Safari.
