Let it breathe

I really liked Matthew's idea of removing the "input look", once you focus a text field. It frees up the claustrophobic feeling and lets your typing give some breathing room. Also the UX doesn't get compromised because in the unfocused state it's still screaming: "Hey, I'm a text input, click me".

So it's now also on tlk.io. But we still have to add that the text field grows when you type more than one line, otherwise it's not really freeing. ;-)

I like the idea, but it needs an affordance to indicate when more than two lines of text have been typed. This is especially true on Mac OS X, where scroll bars aren't visible and the resize handle that OS X adds to text fields is missing.

Really like the interaction of throwing the text up into the stream. Think I'll try that too ;)

Really cool but one suggestion: If you start typing your message, and then go back to type your name, could you add a key-event for hitting enter on your nickname to send the message?

@Jon Yes, the plan is that when you type more than one line, the (invisible) textfield expands and grows in height. So you won't see any text get cut off. I hope it's gonna work.

@Basheer Hmm.. Sounds great, but isn't that kinda an edge case? I think people type their name just once.

Nicely done, Sim. My only suggestion is to block Enter inserting a line return, so you don’t get a line flicker. Also, if you post it onkeydown or oninput instead of onkeyup, you get a bonus half second of instantness.

Is that a parallax effect I see in the first four seconds of the video?

@Matthew Yep, that flicker, when the line break gets added before posting it, bugs me too. Maybe that **onkeydown** you're mentioning already solves it. Thanks, will try that out.

Yeah, right. There is a parallax effect. It's nice, but scroll performance is suffering a bit. ;-(
