@Chad I usually use a technique similar to this for drop shadows and other glow effects. It stays all vector and you have a tone of control. There is a slight learning curve you have to get over to be as efficient with these effects as opposed to the raster effects. I also use meshes and blends, but they take longer. If I know 100% that something is only going to used at a particular size I will use Illustrator's Drop Shadow effect over the Feather effect. Illustrator's Feather look a little choppier to me especially with Blending Modes applied to them.

Just a technique question. Do you find yourself feather objects more for shadows/glows/etc., or do you utilize illustrator effects settings.
It's the control you have over those types of elements that has me thrown considering that is: all illustrator, all the time.
