Rebound of my buddy @nagle’s original. I tried to increase the flow through the wordmark but may have abstracted an already abstract idea too much. Thoughts?
Overall, I think readability on the new version suffers. Here's why:
The "n" is no longer apparent...with the way it was barely there to begin with, it really needs to hit the baseline flush in order to be seen as an "n". Same complaint with the "r", without the base rubbing flat against the baseline, it turns into a shape that's trying to do too much. You also lose the symmetry between the first three shapes, something I thought was working well. The more I stare at your "nr" combination, the more I see a goat's head. I need to stop staring at it.
Moving down the line, seeing your rebound drives home a struggle I had with mine and a flaw to both of our designs: the second "u" looks like a "J"...another case of a shape trying too hard to be clever. I'd definitely revisit that if I revisit my design.
Now that the “l” doesn't touch the baseline at all, it is too fragmented and gets lost. The baseline is what keeps your eye grounded while moving left to right and every letterform needs to touch it. In your version, the "l" is reduced to an accent mark or something similar.
I do like the tail on your "y" much better than my pregnant tail, I just don't know how well it would work if the "y" needed to stand on its own (once the "l" finds its way back to the baseline).
But hey, what the hell do I know? The dribbblers seem to like yours better. Thanks for sharing and for taking the time to rebound.
