Thanks for the comments and +1s, everyone. Here's a revised version with variably tall bars and some decoration. The good thing about it is that it also works in monochrome.
The friendly squareness of the typeface is a courtesy of an excellent Geogrotesque.
Hadn't thought of the music reference until you mentioned it and you're right, it is hard to shake. That said, I think the colour contributes quite a bit to that impression - I get it much less looking at the monochrome version. Maybe a more muted colour like a grey instead of the yellow could help? Overall though, I do prefer this version (and the first one), the concept feels more subtle.

This one communicates the message clearer. How bout green/orange/red being on the those bars? Like on a soundesk or hi-fi system.
