Never mask out a blur. Instead, use the mask to create a selection and then apply the blur to the selected area.

But the one you have shown as good has a very strange blur applied to the keyline that looks unnatural.
Thanks for the tip. I can see that the variation on the right looks more realistic concerning the paper and the font.
But the line really looks strange, getting thicker instead of thinner.
I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. Thanks Josh!

Interesting point, I really just tossed a lens blur onto an example. It "tends" to produce a nicer effect for DOF illusions.
