Character Illustration Process 001

I don't do illustration as much and as consistently as I'd like, but when I do it's always fun to discover new ways of getting to the end result.

I'm a bit impatient and sometimes find that my sketching skills fall short of representing the idea in my head so I'll rush straight into Illustrator. That doesn't always work out well so this time I took a step back and made sure I solidified my idea on paper before moving it into digital production.

Some little things I learnt:

⚡️ Sketching gives you the time to think deeply about what suits the message you're trying to communicate, rather than stumbling across a cool combination of shapes that you later find a way to work for your intended purpose.

⚡️ The digital production time of the character was much faster.

⚡️ The sketch isn't the be-all and end-all, it just provides a solid base on which to build upon. At that early stage, it doesn't matter if the sketch doesn't 100% reflect what you see in your head... it will eventually!

Hope you enjoy this little process shot. It's showing the different stages at which I tweaked the illustration to get closer to the intended result:

1) Sketch 2) Shape blocking 3) Base colouring (where to use different shades of the same blue) 4) Accent colouring (adding the green) 5) Details (shadows/glows for that whimsical feel)

Added a bigger snapshot so you can see it up close. Check it out! More to come! :)

Feedback is most welcome, I'd love to improve!
