After the initial logo concept, I have looked at the best way to create a French train icon that captures the many varieties of these streamlined trains. I don't want to pick on a train in particular rather to create an 'average' look.
At the same time, simplifying it as much as possible. So initially I have 4 train icons with 6 variations of the windscreen. I am not expecting that it 'has' to be one of these, quite likely further rounds of icon design will be needed.
Look at the logo concept in context on the proposed website :
So it's not my intention to create a uber realistic design, but a clean and detail free icon. One that when you look at it, conjours up the general sense of a French train, but also one that makes you feel that booking tickets via Capitaine Train will be a quick, clean, streamlined process.
Capitaine Train is not a train company, but a ticket booking company.
At 1st glace I honestly didn't think they were trains. I thought they were little ninja characters.
Maybe add something to it, to keep it minimalist but also define it as a train. Some of the french trains had split windows, like a plane, maybe add some lines down the front window screen to show paneled glass rather than one big window?
Jamie : Yeah, I did look at headlights, but with the original coloured version with the white stripes, the headlights clashed quite a bit.
headlights So it depends on how I end up colouring the icon. If it's a flat colour only, then I will certainly look at headlights to help define the train.
I like the bottom row with the track. To me, those are the only ones that look like trains. Maybe have the track in slight perspective like the iconography of railroad signs. There's something to be said for creating your own look, but there's also something to be said for pulling from what already works.
The bottom row, 4th from the left, is my preference here. I like the idea of having a track below the train, which reinforces what it is I'm looking at (at first glance, I thought these were mobile devices with screens). The 4th from the left has a rounded windscreen, which is similar to the current logo's look, and reminds me of a French train (even though I've never been on one).
Humming, I don't really see anything that I would recognize as track in any of the options, sorry! Why not try maki the track re obious with some sleepers cutout of the black? Maybe it will work and maybe it won't ;). Otherwise I quite like the first on the second row :), that to me says modern train the most.

Gavin : Fair enough comment. Thing to remember once hey are coloured they will look less like hooded ninja's. :)
I did play with headlights, but explain why they are missing in comment below.

I did think that pal, which is why I clicked on the rebounded shot of the coloured train, and again, to me, just looked like a colourful ninja.
