I agree with Nathan. It depends on if an action brings out the icons. Right seems more fluent. But the circles do work with the Path application. Also depends on the brand and the rest of the application.
Rebound to my previous shot. These are the corner UI menus for a video game. The client originally wanted flat, but then requested a design inspired by Braun product design. Obviously these aren't nearly as cool as Braun product design though...

Are the icons only visible when you push the menu button? If so I think I like the left version. Right version looks too static.

I'm partial to the left. Path uses a similar UI, and the circles carried throughout the visual language.
