1. They make you curious and you learn what they mean be hovering them, which rewards you with a nice animated effect (and some sweet content if you decide to click)
2. they are cute, aren't they?
But yes, I agree, they are far away from being easy to understand.
Certainly. You see, I used a coffee mug for my contact button once, and people didn't get it immediately, though some did which was great (It was assumed that contact could be made over a cup of coffee, get it?). What made up for it was that it was simple and beautiful, but it still caused confusion so I changed it out. In your case though, it's beautiful, but I still can't associate with anything in mind, besides the fact that your site is so simple, that the icons look as though they belong in a retro site like 8Bit.me or with Shaun Inman.
Not saying I don't love it, because I do, but that's something to take into consideration.

The icons are beautifully executed but I'm trying really really hard work out what a new visitor to your site might interpret them to mean!

Two things to my defense:
1. They make you curious and you learn what they mean be hovering them, which rewards you with a nice animated effect (and some sweet content if you decide to click)
2. they are cute, aren't they?

I face the same problem when I create icons and make the same assumptions... But they usually still confused the crap out of the reader...

I think you're right.
I really enjoy creating pixel style, but it doesn't fit.
I'm currently testing out a few variations but I think I'll go back to something more minimal.
Thanks for the excellent feedback.

By the way, I cannot believe you use Windows!

@David why do you think I use Windows?
EDIT
That tweet helped, the font rendering is of course Photoshop, not Windows. Still it looks pretty bad, I agree.
