Practising my gaming UI design with a mock-up of a would be Super Mario Bros. for iPhone. Had to shrink the width to 400px from 480px and crop the top for Dribbble display.
The run button would act as a toggle, highlighted when active, and gray when deactive. Likewise the Fireball button would be highlighted red if the user had a fire flower.
Thanks Rob! Yeah, it's definitely a challenge. Screen real estate is so important in Mario! Makes for good practice though. :) I'm going to keep working with it to see if I can come up with something more ideal.

great job. Mario doesn't always stay in the same position though - would he ever go behind the d-pad so you couldn't see him while playing?
that's a great interface, it'd be so awesome if it were real!!! 1-UP!
