I say go with this way. It seems a bit more obvious to me what you are trying to point out.
Thanks Cody. I was feeling that way too. It'll especially help on the smaller elements like ball terminals and serifs.

Something that crossed my mind. If you release this to the public, textured overlays instead of color would be helpful to color blindness.
