Just playing around with more ideas for http://www.hnreaderapp.com/. Had a developer bail, but a new one stepped up...

This looks very nice, but it is too sparse and spacious. I can only speak from my experience (being a daily HN reader for over two years), but the design feature of HN web interface is its information density - 20-30 headlines per page. It helps assessing the state and the dynamics of the stories at a glance and it is essential to the HN browsing experience. Having only 3-4 stories in a view just ain't gonna work.

@Alex I understand your point, and I actually thought about that as I was putting it all together. The idea behind this view however is that you could still scroll through as many stories as you'd like (or that are listed on the pages of the HN screen scrape).

I think the density of stories is more of a preference thing than anything. Unlike you, I find the HN site very difficult to read, as there is no differentiation between links, story titles, comments, authors, etc. It's very difficult for me to scan anything.

Perhaps it's something we could customize in the Settings -- having a dense and sparse view...

Well, it wasn't easy, but I got used to Paul's interface. It is really a gem if you let it grow on you :)

In any case, I really hope you tackle some usability issues with your app rather than just the presentation. For example, being able to hide unwanted stories from the front page (and therefore get more stories pulled up from the second page) would be an awesome thing to have.

Why not take a page from the latest GMail redesign and offer multiple information density settings?

Also, maybe that's outside the scope of the app, but it would be awesome to have a feature that automatically download the first 10 stories for offline reading.

@Sacha those would certainly be cool features, but probably won't be ready on a first iteration. Thanks for the feedback & suggestions though!
