Currently designing an app for the iPhone 4 that basically controls the LED flash on the device. A simple on/off button and control to make the flash strobe with an indicator at the top.

Open to suggestions for improvements. I was hesitant to use a grainy texture on the button and background, but both are metal materials and it makes sense to do so.

You can see the full size design here.

The detail is just insane. My one feedback is that the vertical groove on the actual button doesn't seem deep/real compared to everything else.

Good start, Tom, however, in your full shot, I dislike the funky shadow you've got happening on the activity button up top. To me, it also looks too much like a button, so people would be fairly inclined to click it.

As for the power button, i'd try seeing what it looks like with the outer bevel being closer to the edge of the actual button. It makes it look rather flat, and takes away from the fact that it looks like a clickable button. I'd also see how it looks without the drop shadow on the outer bevelled area — makes it look like it's sitting above the lower base.

One other thing for the power button. Try bumping up the grain on the actual button and adding motion blur to it so it looks more like brushed aluminium (look at the iSync icon for reference)

As for the strobe button, i'd try keeping it simple and removing the status light/button thingy to the left of the text. At this point, it's just adding visual clutter. Looking at the UI, I'm assuming it lights up when active? Isn't that the same thing the top little light graphic (lightening bolt) will be doing? I'd also ditch the Neutraface for something more standard, or come up with a glyph that accurately represents strobing.

Made a few beautiful changes thanks to Jesse Dodds.

The name has also changed to Luminesce from Luminescent which was a tad too long. I've tried to keep the interface as simple as possible so please checkout the full size.

Tapping the center button turns the iPhone 4's flash light on/off. Tapping the strobe glyph in the top left hand corner turns on/off strobing of the light. The light indicator in the top right hand corner indicates what the flash light is doing on the back of the phone.

The strobe glyph may look a little confusing at first. I considered putting the word strobe back into the design, but that made things cluttered. It only takes one tap for a new user to understand it's purpose so I believe this is a logical choice.

Anyway I'd love to know what you think.
