It's actually pretty easy to do.... Illustrator using the blend mode with "specified steps" thin weight at one end, heavier weight at the other. Then on the stokes themselves using "dash/dotted" strokes with various values. The more curvy the shape though the more you'll have to get in there and do some hand toolin.
