I decided to go with the smooth treatment, and added a "swipe to refresh" interaction -- Do you think this works?

I think this looks great, but it's not clear to me that you can swipe that button - my inclination would be just to tap it instead.

I like the smooth and the general sense of depth in the header. I also like the swipe to refresh idea. My only thought is to make the well (?) that the button slides in a little deeper. The affordance for that action just isn't quite clear enough considering it's not a standard interaction for refreshing.

What about if you did the slider like this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/452595/Ongo.png

Why have swipe to refresh when you could do it simpler, and quicker, with a single tap?

@Josh - actually that's a question that's kept me going back and forth on this element in the UI -- I think for a cleaner result it should just be a swipe-down-to-refresh interaction within the content area.
