It really is amazing the difference a good shadow makes. To create the shadow for the base of this icon, I duplicated all three shapes (top and sides) into a single shape layer and adjusted the top slightly so it was a little lower, then converted that shape to a PS smart object, then added gaussian blur (1px). I then duplicated that layer a further 4 times adjusting the blur by a pixel and adjusted all shadow layers to be at 55% opacity :)
