    I've wanted Apple to do something like this for years, I'm getting quite bored of the current dock! I wish they updated it for Lion. Any devs wonna make a hack? :p

    Candybar is great for icons, but there isn't much flexibility for the dock background. You can either change the 3D image or have a "simple" dock, unless I'm mistaken?

    I don't think you can make the dock run all the way across the screen, but you can definitely theme it in a lot of different ways.

    - Swap to Simple mode to remove reflections and such
    - Use an application to make the dock transparent. Mirage found http://macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16802835 here apparently still works in Lion. Haven't tested myself.
    - Add the "bar" you want to the actual desktop image

    A little clunky, but at least it's viable. :)
