This is part of one of the ideas I'm working on for the new SimpleGeo site. Thought I'd share :) More updates as I make more progress. It won't end up entirely grayscale, but I tend to always design in gray first for some reason. Maybe I was a tattoo artist in a past life...
Can't wait to see more! That's really interesting that you go gray first. I guess we all kind of do it, but more just adding a primary color to test things out. Do you find it hard to double back in work and put in the color? Or do you have a top secret trick?
I don't find it too hard to start adding color. I tend to use gray in my color palettes a lot, so I usually get the design to where I'm happy then start tinkering with anchor colors. From there I decide how many other colors are necessary. I find if that I start with a color, I tend to start designing for that color, rather than for the content... if that makes sense. I'm certainly not afraid of color, but I terms of architecture, I like to first figure out the blueprints before I start picking paint.
@Jeffrey: Makes a lot of sense. I like it. I feel like I tend to do the same, although I'm just a huge fan of everything gray. Maybe it's because I'm partially color-blind. I hope not too many people see this though. Because a color-blind designer is like a half-blind seeing eye dog.

Loved that map pattern on your print Dribbble, and am hyped to see it carried over to the new site design.
Giddy, I am :)

I like this ten-fold over the current stuff #jussayin. The topography pattern is touch like Incase, but makes way more sense for you guys so rock it.
Looking forward to seeing more.

Hmm I guess I never really thought of the incase topo pattern. Good observation, but I'm not too worried about it.

Can I ask where you got (or how you created) that topographic map look? I'm in need of something similar and don't know where to start.
