I'll finalize this eventually...Worked on varying the line weight and increasing legibility. Next need to work on overall balance of the mark and adding in "Design." Any suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em.
You probably have put a lot of time into this and there are things that I like but there are more things I don't like about it. You are a really clean designer. This logo looks like it's stuck in between handwritten and script. I liked your metroscript version better :)
If you're going to go for custom script, sometimes it can be done by yourself but sometimes it's better to hire a letterer,... ala like Drew Melton whom I've used on 4 or 5 projects now.
@Sean, you're killing me. I actually really like(d) the Metroscript version, but after showing an initial draft to about 10-15 of my friends/family, they all said that the handwriting was much more "me" than the Metroscript version. I agree that is a bit between handwriting and script, but I think it is supposed to be like that. It is based off my signature/handwriting, so I guess I considered that a good thing but maybe its not.
I have talked with Drew Melton about maybe working together on some future projects, but maybe it would be good to have him help with this one too. My only reservations about that is a) is it strange if I am not the one who actually creates my own mark? and b) if I am not going to have the mark be close to my own handwriting maybe I shouldn't use a custom script at all. Either way, you've given me some stuff to think about...
I could be the only one seeing this, but I immediately read the mark as "Panther".
In terms of... "Is it wrong to not design my own mark?" I always loved SquaredEye's explanation of why he worked with someone else to establish his brand. It is worth looking up if you've never read it.
Ultimately, it is about what kind of work you consider your specialty. If it is branding, then you should probably do your own. If it is web design, you could make a strong case for finding an expert.
After some good comments on the last version, I decided to rework the direction slightly. I collaborated with the very talented Sergey Shapiro to create the "Pautler" portion of the mark. I'm still working the integration of "Design" into the mark. I think this is my favorite, but I have some other options in the attachment. Which one do you like most or do you have any other ideas?

Definitely like the t-l transition a lot better. Still think the u needs some work. But overall, much better progress.

@Vin Okay, I was kind of thinking that too. Do you think the u is just awkward or is it difficult to read? I may end up separating the a and u.

imo the u just needs a terminal to make it distinctive as a u

Just my two cents.
