Redesigned and relaunched the blog/Tumblr thingy for Absenter. Things that don't really fit into the scope over at Weightshift and are more personal/fun/photography go here.
I've enjoyed Tumblr themes but have been wanting to design one for a while now and we're planning on developing this into a full-blown theme at some point in the near future. Consider this beta testing. It's based on the design I did for my Weightshift colleague, Scott Robbin.
Joshua: yes, agreed. I'm using Tumblr because I find it so very easy to use and publish, especially from mobile and on the go.
I'm not completely happy with the tagline either just yet — it's meant for the "description" field/text and I wanted a certain amount of conciseness rather than a paragraph of text to detract from the content proper. I'll play with it some.
Yes, it's a landscape vs. portrait thing — I'm quite fond of "breaking" grids in this format, cheating photos negatively in the margins. This is a common design component per grid systems. It provides a nice visual breakup from uniformity or monotony.
I like to maintain photo aspects as much as possible as well, but also working within Tumblr's constraints and the grid I'm using. The photo should be relatively close in size when possible — it's also difficult given the cameras I shoot and their respective ratios and sizing them appropriately for the grid.
I definitely like the "breaking the grid" look. What's interesting about your approach is that all of the photos have the same general "weight" on the page, which is a great solution to the typical disproportionate photo layouts that follow a fixed width for all photos, which is what I do on my site and has bothered me since day one.
So as usual I'm filing this idea of yours away for future reference. :)

Ditto and likewise on yours, Dan!

Definitely like both a lot.

It's a design I want to look at in context, not read in Tumblr. Tasty grid work, great use of space.
That said, the "A blog by Naz Hamid" tagline feels just a tad too tiny (or maybe needs a boldness to it?) Something about it throws me off a little.
Everything you design makes me happy.

It's great, Naz. I think you should release it as a premium theme and make some beer money for yourself...

Frank: thanks and we're thinking that may be the plan...

Nice and clean Naz, great work.
What's the reasoning behind why some photos extend into the left column and why others don't? Is it a portrait vs landscape decision?

Phil: thanks.

I tend to obsess over these things a little.

BTW, what is the favicon?

Travis: heh, it's my default Tumblr avatar, which I thought was sort of funny since posts in your dashboard are meant to look like a speech bubble.
And, the photo is of Henry Rollins, who I respect a lot.
