I wanted a new iPhone lock screen wallpaper. This is the result. Trio Hot is the image shown. Trio Cold is a blue and purple variant. Downloads are Retina res. Let me know if you'd like an iPad version.

Nope. I have 4 layers of triangles (as shape layers in Photoshop), with a bitmap layer masked to it. The bitmap layer was a photo with some corrections. I then applied a mosaic filter on so that each block was entirely flat, but masked with the triangles. This means is quick to experiment with lots of different source images. I tried about 6 before settling on the final image. I created the triangles in Illustrator first, at the exact resolution needed for the final image (each square is 32 × 32 px, so it fits perfectly into the iPhone's 640 × 960 resolution).
The colour treatment is completely separate — a gradient map and gradient, plus levels for a little more contrast and punch.

I remember seeing some of Andy's work a while ago. I really like it! Crazy complexity in some of them. His work wasn't a direct inspiration for this wallpaper, but I'm happy to be compared. Would love to know how he creates his images.
