Separate comment, separate thought—I understand the today/yesterday ribbons (not unlike Path) but I don’t know how helpful that is in terms of what I care about (or what I want to see) when I use the app. Beer is usually enjoyed in sessions and with friends, right? Might want to take a page from Gowalla’s book and go the session+friends route instead of the stream of beer checkins route. It seems more intelligent and people-focused instead of beer-focused.
1) You can't highlight any whiter than white, thusly a text-shadow above Yesterday is necessary. It feels good on my phone.
2) The bevels feel great on my phone but looks overdone on here.
3) Gowalla's approach is cool & we may tackle that in the future but that involves some serious functionality changes that would push back launch. Duly noted!
Haven't checked in on the progress of this app since some of the initial shots you posted...but, boy have you made progress!
In my experience with designing for iOS (specifically retina displays), the over-exaggeration of shadows, highlights, bevels, and embosses is completely necessary. I've found that since everything is being pushed into a 3.5" display, a lot of the subtler approaches often don't make it through onto the final product.
Anyway, I like the path you're on. It's looking way more iOS-ish, but with a bit of personality. Looks great, keep chugging along!
What if you made everything flat? No effects no dropshaows, inner shadows, bevels etc.
Choose a distinctive color (which you are close to) and maybe a very subtle texture (I personally would even scratch the texture to be honest).
Less is more. I know it's hard, but try to remove ALL effects from every layer. And see how it feels. Add an effect only if necessary (like the text on the image, and even that isn't really necessary). I bet you will like it better.
Another comment, The today / yesterday tab is over designed in my opinion. Not sure why its in the tab thingy. It's also over on the left and kind of kills the readability scalability of the stream.
Simplify bro. Dont add graphical elements if they don't serve a purpose.
All that said, this is just my personal taste, might be different than yours so if you like the "effects" look go for it! Giving feedback on Dribble makes me feel weird, wish we had more time to sit together at Brooklyn Beta.
@Yaron I love that you're giving me comments on Dribbble! It'd be a little bit unnecessary but I really could give you reasons for why I added graphical elements to everything on this screen. I'll explain it to you if you don't get it when you open the app and flick & tap with delight!
I do wish we had more time but it was awesome to see you for at least a little bit.
@Brian I really agree, man. A little bit of exaggeration is necessary, as the screen really is small. I'm almost hesitant to post iOS stuff on here because of how far out of context it really is. These screens look *completely* different on my iPhone.
Cheers, brother! I'm eager to get this app in your hands!

Simple is really dang tough when you want to be different.

Hmm. Overall thought: fewer layer styles = better. There’s a lot of beveling going on, but I don’t think it’s adding to the iOS-ness of the app.
Also. “Yesterday” needs a highlight, not a shadow. Light text + dark background = text shadow. Dark text + light background = text highlight.

My opinion, rake it or leaf it.
