Tabbed would be great. If it was a "reply" to me, it would be different, but it's EVERYONE who comments after you comment. Why do we need to see every single comment? Drives me mad! Ha ha.
The hilarious irony of it all is that since we keep commenting on this shot, we will ALL be getting a mad amount of notifications about it for days to come.
I get that excessive notifications are annoying. But what about when you comment on something, and want to be reminded to go back to see what someone said about your comments?
Why not have a switch that lets you turn comment following on and off per shot.
Once it's been installed, it will pull all the followup comments out, group them, and add them to a toggled element at the bottom of the Activity page.

I do kind of care, but perhaps some type of filter or tabbed UI in the activity area will stop the overload of information.
EDIT: Either that or build in an actual 'reply' feature for the comments that you'll get a notification about, not every comment.

Or at least say "8 people followed up on your comment on New Front Page". That way we aren't bombarded when we comment on the popular shots.
