Starting to fill in the gaps. What's interesting (to me anyway) is that with the exception of 2-bit "Mineo" the contour of each set of sprites is identical.

2-bit is entirely about the silhouette (and a few stark features). 4-bit introduces volume which is then largely lost to 8-bit despite the addition of color. 16-bit is where all three (silhouette, volume and color) come together.

I'm not thinking very far ahead while doing these. Which is sure to come back and bite me in the ass later. The sheer number of pixels yet to be pushed (considering the goal of a rich world full of unique creatures) is pretty daunting.

(Also, not satisfied with the palette of the 8-bit Grimp yet.)

The 2nd sprite in the first two rows reminds me of Pokey of Earthbound fame... for some odd reason. xD

OK the 16-bit Gaido with pink nose is just adorable. I'm historically terrible at most video games so I may never see him though. *sniff*

@Bryan, that's Mineo's death tantrum sprite. I really need to get around to playing Earthbound...

@Dan, another excellent use for Dribbble then ;) But don't worry, you're guaranteed to be able to see at least the 2- and 4-bit Gaido during the opening tutorial when he teaches you how to upscale and use resolution changes to clear obstacles.
