Lion Logo Progress

Progress on my lion logo. Working to keep some of the irregularity while making the mark stronger and digitized.

I'm playing around with the expression - this version is more regal or somber. The original had a more playful expression, with almost a wink happening. Is the new direction good?

    Matt -

Overall, I like it. Hard to give more critique because I don't know what it's purpose is or why you're designing it.

I have to say I preferred the hand drawn lines from the first one. Also his face looks a bit sad, in this one.

@Anthony - It's self-branding logo mark. I do business as In Like A Lion. Read up on the original shot for more on the process arriving at this state.

@Matthew - Yeah, the more I look at the thumbnails the more I see this expression as somber or sad. It is certainly lacking the playfulness or spunkiness of the original, which I'm realizing was a better direction. I'll have to work on the facial expression.

Regarding the vector lines vs hand-drawn: Do you really think the original hold there own in context of a logo?

I'd say that this lion needs some more pride in his expression, so as to show he's the expert.

It's going to be a tricky battle, methinks. You hit gold on step one and you don't want to lose any of the organic playfulness, as you said - but still need to advance it as an icon.

This is the kind of logo that you'll struggle with for awhile but the end result is going to be worth it

Personally I loved the unique look of the hand-drawn lines. But, I think the best approach probably lies somewhere in the middle. Maybe try a few less lines, with a bit more space between them.

Matt, I think the main issue is that all of the lines are perfectly spaced. If you can add some character through inconsistencies, I think it will help a lot. I also think the lines should be thicker with a little more space. If you make this smaller (most likely you will when you use it in various places... ie avatars, etc) it looks like a gray bg vs the lines that you want to show through...

@Russell - I agree. Needs more spunk and confidence.

@Brian - Thanks for the words of encouragement in general. It will be a battle, but I'm glad to have my eyes on the prize.

@Matthew & @Chandler - I appreciate the opinion on the lines. As far as they are concerned, I plan on treating it like an app icon: actually tweaking several different sizes with varying amount of detail (like # of lines) instead of just shrinking or growing the original.
