::-webkit-scrollbar makes a horizontal scrollbar much more palatable. I think we're pre-conditioned to view a page with horizontal scrollbars as in error, or poorly designed.
I'm also working to find optimal values for article content heights depending on the browser window height. I'm trying to avoid a vertical scrollbar for the most part. Flexible layouts for the win.
Just beware it's in development. No flexible layouts in place, and Safari/Chrome/Firefox only. And if it doesn't appear correctly at first, refresh, refresh, refresh!
An interesting take on presenting the information. I have no issue with the horizontal scrollbar, but maybe something to think about to catch the attention of users is... The scroll bar is modest and nice but I think since there is so much gray tones on the page that it is not immediately recognizable that the scrollbar is a navigation item (an important one at that if you are using it in this setting) needed to be used to move through the content.
I think if the drag bar was a different color than anything else on the page, maybe a mustard yellow, a green or something complementary with the rest of the colors you have on the page, then that would help point it out. As it stands now I just think it could get lost.
Good thoughts about the scrollbar, I was trying to make it subtle, but perhaps to the detriment of the overall experience. I'm going to test it with a few others.

If anyone wants to view it in action here's the test file: http://designintellection.com/media/new/planus.html
