I would be tempted to pop both out a bit more, so you could understand what they were if you couldn't hover and then leave the functionality as it is. People who can hover over elements get the slide, people who can't; don't, however the links would still be available.

The comments, date, and maybe category would be partially hidden behind the page and slide out on hover.

Thanks for the feedback guys! The type is the really great ITC Chino bold italic. It used to be free, but sadly it's not anymore.
@Ralph, good point! I'll have to think of something. Maybe swiping to open and close the tab?
