This looks really great. I don't think it's lazy-web to go with opacity for hovers-- less image stuff to load & when I'm on my iPad checking out SimpleBits, I won't bother with any of that hover noise anyways.
Also, I'm loving RGBA for background/color changing stuff like this... looking forward to seeing the new site launch! I wonder who will go live first ;)

Adding Gedy's new icons to the design in progress. Fits like a glove.
Using opacity and CSS Transitions to handle lazy hover/focus treatments as well, of which this style icon works wonderfully.

@Trent Excellent point re: touch and hover, and how that could be reason TO use opacity+transitions. I use "lazy" for solutions that are efficient ;-)
