Our university web directory has two interfaces: 1) a public A-Z index of all the university websites and 2) a management interface for dept webmasters to keep track of their site information. Our new directory will help webmasters track site visits from the public A-Z index, let them choose keywords to highlight their site in search results, and see university web standard compliance statistics more easily. Playing around with @font-face and a baseline grid in the design to make otherwise mostly bland data more engaging.
The statistics view for an individual site within our A-Z web directory. Click-through statistics and popularity tracking will help us better highlight most useful sites over a period of time. (Popularity will be determined by weighing recent clicks more heavily than older ones.)
As meaningless as most statistics are for usability testing, they will give some small incentive for departmental webmasters to include their sites in the overall A-Z web directory. (Another incentive would be prioritized search listing on the primary university search page.)
The bar graph is designed using only CSS (with PHP to determine the width of each bar). Headings are set in Museo Slab using @font-face.
Part of the management interface for our University A-Z Web Directory includes a section for our department to review sites for compliance with university web standards. Even though only 3 people ever see this, I wanted to make sure it was still enjoyable to use. (I'm sad that my favorite status icon - Hidden - is also the least likely to be used. May have to add a few fake sites just to hide them...)
