After sleeping on the first idea, I felt it lacked the 'finesse' and 'style' that we are looking to marry up with the rock and gothic vibe. It was only the first idea, so have spent 12hrs solid - looking at variations.
This idea came in around the 11hr 50min mark. :) It feels more like a fashion label, so am happier with this direction. This format could be easily applied to a strip of fabric, to run alongside the neck for example. But hopefully doesn't limit itself to just a label, should look equally respectable on a letterhead etc.
Main change being the typeface, this is much more elegant, hints more at 'fashion and style' and has a neutrality to it.
Also changed the logomark', to give the screen version a bit more depth. The client and I have yet to discuss colours, so this is by no means fixed, and could just end up being black.
What if you try smth like this http://goo.gl/V5M7 or this http://goo.gl/BGzx , what i mean is the elements to be grouped together, just my opinion :) i like the font u used but i would say you should work a bit more with the symbol! :)
The "M" and "B" in Malibu feels a bit smudged at that size - although I like how all the fonts work together, those two letters could possibly use some tweaking. All together I really like the look/feel though.
I think I like the first version better. For whatever reason, the first version said clothing to me more than this does. I like the symbol in this logo, but the I like the layout and type of the first version.
Dave - karinne : Yup, the Malibu wording definitely needs to be adjusted, which has already been seen to. :)
Jake : I see your point, but at least for me, I am much much happier with this version. I have been able to mock this version up on various clothing labels and tags, and it really lends itself better to this than the first version.
But we need to see what the client ultimately feels. But appreciate your viewpoint, maybe the client will agree with you. :)
Jasjen : The situation is that the symbol is part of the existing identity, so I need to keep it legible for reproduction and sizing as it will be used on clothing. So I am limited to what I can do with the 'cross' symbol.
I actually like this version much better. Feels daring but still very professional and classy. I think the lines are great - it gives the logo that perfect balance with the cross on the left.
But the red cross with the shading in this version reminds me immediately of the Knights Templar (http://bit.ly/c7hkSe), which have/had a very dubious reputation (to put it mildly). This resemblance was less obvious in your other version.
btw: when do you intend to publish your bg paper texture ;-)
Nice work Graham, like this version much better. The first didn't had that professional touch. I would probably enlarge "malibu", especially when this will be printed on labels and stuff.
With this spacing between the letters of "malibu" I think both horizontal lines should be a little bit shorter, they're closer to the "m" and "u" then the letters are to themselves, if you know what I mean?

I like this version much better. Could possibly still remove the top and bottom horizontal lines.

Oh yeah! This version is much better.
I have to agree with Dave Keller above about the MALIBU. I find the "A" (with the "M" and "B") also a bit bunched up.
I love the cross in this version much better. The whole design as whole is rockin'.

Graham, the Logo really looks fab.
